OVERVIEW

Bucklers are small fist shields used in hand-to-hand combat. They are used differently than their larger counterparts. They are lightweight, making them easy to carry on the hip. Often hung from the sword scabbard, it allows the use of both hands for a pike or staff weapon. Capable of deflecting as well as delivering blows they are easily controlled with one hand, leaving the other hand free to engage in combat with a sword or other weapons. Historically they were also used by archers as the small size did not interfere with shooting a longbow. Early medieval illustrations show bucklers used by Celtic, Frankish, and Byzantine horsemen. It became more prevalent during the 1100s to 1300s when medieval infantrymen used bucklers with swords or falchions and lined up behind troops with pole weapons. Its use continued through the Renaissance in rapier dueling. The practice became so widespread that the exercise of sword and buckler became one of the most common sports of the Renaissance.
