One of the advantages of pewter is that it does not need regular polishing to maintain its gorgeous appearance; pewter does not tarnish like silver. To maintain your pewter pieces, an occasional cleaning with a quality proprietary metal polish like Flitz will keep it looking brilliant.
Pewter should be washed and dried as soon as possible after use to avoid possible staining caused by certain foods and beverages. If you use pewter cups and mugs for citrus drinks, colas, or other acidic drinks, it can cause pitting and stains. Once this happens, it is difficult, if not impossible, to remove these blemishes.
For best results, we don't recommend automatic dishwashers for pewter, only hand washing.
If you place a pewter item near a flame, hot oven or stove, it could melt. Pewter tends to melt at 450 degrees, about the temperature that bread gets toasted at.
Should staining or scratches occur, pewter polishes, scouring powder or fine steel wool may be used to maintain satin finish pewter. Bright finish pewter should only be washed and dried or buffed with a soft cloth.
